Housing your Degus

Large, Strong and Spacious Cosy and comfortable Playtime Cleaning Degus are active little creatures and like lots of space to exercise in. The bigger the degu cage the better!  Large, Strong and Spacious Degus love to climb so degu cages need to be large with several levels or shelves for your degu to explore and jump from.  As degus cages are quite tall and roomy you need to consider if you have the available space to house one in your home. Degus are very sensitive to high temperatures and can develop heat stroke very quickly as they can not sweat like humans. Ideally your degu cage should be kept in a draught free place, away from direct sunlight and at a room temperature between 18 – 22ºC. Degus are intelligent and make good escape artists so your degu cage needs to be secure. Gnawing and chewing are a degus favourite pastime so your degu cage needs to be made from strong metal wire. Your degu cage should have a solid base rather than mesh as degus can develop sore feet (a condition called bumble foot) from treading on mesh floors. Degus enjoy digging so provide some wood shavings as a substrate (flooring material).  This will be kinder to their feet rather than a solid, bare floor and is also absorbent. Degus fur and skin are intolerant of water and they need regular sand (or dust) baths to keep their coats healthy and free from grease. Your pet degu should have a dust bath several times a week for about 20 minutes or so.  Remove the dust bath after your degu has used it otherwise they will start to use it as a litter tray.  Metal or ceramic dust baths are available with suitable and safe dust for your degu to use.  They adore their dust baths and are great fun to watch! If it gets hot during the summer months place a granite cooling tile in your degu cage for them to rest on.  Granite naturally maintains a temperature below that of the room and will help your degu feel nice and cool. Adding extra shelves and branches to your degu cage will keep them happily climbing and jumping about.  Clean, safe branches from non-toxic trees are available in our stores.  You can also add suspension bridges, hanging platforms, ladders, tubes and hammocks for your degu to play with. Wooden chewing toys and gnawing blocks will keep your degu contented and they also enjoy nibbling on cuttlebone.  These will help to keep your degus teeth trim. A good tip is to change your degus toys regularly and alter their position in the cage as this provides a slightly different environment for them to explore. Once your degu is trained and is comfortable with you they can play outside their cage.  Time spent outside their cage should always be supervised and you should degu-proof your home:  do not allow them in the kitchen as it is too dangerous, keep all trailing electrical cables and breakable ornaments out of reach, remove all house plants and shut all doors and windows.  You might find that a small play pen or rabbit / guinea pig run is useful.
