What you Need to Know About Ticks

What is a Tick?

Ticks are small, blood-sucking parasites that can cause a variety of health problems in animals. They can be found in forests, grasslands, or even your own backyard. We need to be aware of the risks associated with ticks and the steps to protect your pet from these dangerous parasites.

Ticks feed on the blood of their hosts and can transmit diseases through their bites. Common tick-borne illnesses in animals include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. Symptoms of these diseases can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, they can even be fatal.

How to Prevent Ticks:

Use Tick Prevention Products: tick prevention products are safe and very effective for your pet. These can include topical treatments, collars, and oral medications.

Check Your Pet for Ticks: After spending time outside, be sure to check your pet for ticks. Pay close attention to areas like the ears, armpits, and groin, as these are common areas where ticks attach.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy: Ticks thrive in tall grass and brush, so keeping your lawn mowed and free of debris can help reduce the tick population in your yard.

Stay on Trails: When hiking or spending time in the woods, stick to marked trails and avoid walking through tall grass or brush.

What to do if you Find a Tick:

If you do find a tick on your pet, it's essential to remove it promptly. Use a tick tweezers/twister to grasp the tick as close to your pet's skin as possible and pull it straight out. It is crucial to not squeeze the body as it could release the tick's nasty diseases into your pet before the tick is removed.

Be sure to clean the area with alcohol or soap and water after removing the tick. Ticks can be a serious threat to your pet's health, but by taking the right precautions and being vigilant, you can help keep them safe and healthy.

If your pet starts to show any signs of illness or the area from the looks infected, consult with your veterinarian immediately.
