Signs that a bird may be unwell include fluffed-up feathers (a healthy bird only fluffs up to sleep), sitting on the cage floor, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes or nostrils, changes in droppings, excessive sneezing, or unusual quietness. Birds naturally hide signs of illness, so by the time symptoms are visible the bird may be quite unwell. Contact an avian vet promptly if you notice any of these signs.
Pet birds that live solely indoors with no contact with wild birds or the outside ground have a low risk of worm infestation. However, birds that spend time outdoors, live in aviaries, or have contact with wild bird droppings are at higher risk. Consult an avian vet for advice on whether worming is appropriate for your bird and what product to use.
Moulting is a natural process in which birds shed and replace their feathers. It can cause mild itchiness and discomfort. Increase bathing opportunities during moult, offer a diet rich in protein to support new feather growth, and consider a vitamin and mineral supplement. Handle a moulting bird gently as pin feathers (new feathers still in the blood supply) are sensitive.
For birds on a varied, balanced diet that includes pellets, fresh vegetables, and appropriate seeds, additional vitamin supplements may not be necessary. Birds fed primarily on seed mixes are more likely to benefit from supplementation, as seed-heavy diets can be deficient in vitamins A, D3, and calcium. Add supplements to food rather than water where possible for accurate dosing.
