Frequently Asked Questions

What nesting box does a budgie need?

Budgies use a simple wooden nesting box, usually around 15cm x 15cm x 20cm with an entrance hole of about 4cm diameter. The box should be positioned high in the cage and filled with a thin layer of nesting material. Remove the nesting box when you are not actively breeding to prevent hormonal behaviour.

What materials do canaries use for nesting?

Canaries prefer soft nesting materials such as sisal fibre, soft grass, and cotton nesting pads. Provide a canary nesting cup (a small basket or felt cup) and offer loose soft nesting material for the bird to arrange themselves. Avoid synthetic fibres that could entangle feet.

How long does it take for budgie eggs to hatch?

Budgie eggs typically hatch after 18 days of incubation. Clutch sizes are usually 4-6 eggs, laid every other day. Not all eggs are fertile and it is normal for some not to hatch. The hen will incubate the eggs while the cock feeds her. Avoid disturbing the nest box during incubation.

Should I remove the nesting box when not breeding?

Yes. Leaving a nesting box in the cage year-round can encourage constant breeding behaviour and lay excessive eggs, which is hard on the hen's body. Remove the nesting box after the breeding season and only reintroduce it when you are ready to breed again.
