Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a microchip cat flap and a magnetic cat flap?

A microchip cat flap reads your cat's unique microchip number and only unlocks for registered cats. This prevents other neighbourhood cats or wildlife entering the home. A magnetic cat flap uses a magnet attached to the cat's collar to unlock -- less secure as any magnet can trigger it. Microchip cat flaps are recommended for households where unwanted visitors are a concern.

Can a cat flap be fitted into a glass door or wall?

Yes. There are cat flap models designed for glass installation (requires a glazier to cut the glass) and wall-mounted cat flaps that come with tunnel extensions to accommodate wall thickness. Measure the wall or glass thickness before purchasing. Some models are glass-specific and not suitable for walls, so check the product specifications carefully.

How do I train my cat to use a cat flap?

Start by taping the flap open so your cat can walk through freely. Once they are comfortable going through the opening, gradually lower the flap. Lure them through with a treat or favourite toy. For cats that are reluctant, have someone hold the cat on one side and call them through from the other. Most cats learn to use a cat flap within a few days of patient encouragement.

What size cat flap do I need?

Most standard cat flaps fit average-sized domestic cats and measure around 15cm x 17cm (6 x 6.7 inches) in the opening. For larger breeds (Maine Coon, Ragdoll, or large British Shorthairs) a large or extra-large cat flap is recommended. The cat should be able to pass through comfortably without squeezing. If in doubt, size up.
